Abstract
With an annual global production of more than 350 million tons, a highly developed maritime traffic, and a large coastal population, the
Mediterranean is among the most affected area in the world by plastic pollution.
The conference will present an overview of the plastic pollution in the oceans and describe the situation in our waters,
including inputs fate degradation, transport at sea and impacts.
The aspects concerning management measures as well as global and European policies will be discussed
Biography
François Galgani is project manager and head of the IFREMER site in Corsica.
He has more than 30 years of research experience in the fields of oceanography, environmental sciences with a focus on ecotoxicology and marine litter with 140 international publications.
He is Chairman of the European Commission/DG Env /MSFD Technical group on marine litter and co chair of the International
Oceanographic Commission/GESAMP/working group on plastics in the Environment.
He contributed to the UNEA 3 UN environment G 7 and G 20 documents on Marine Litter F Galgani is also editor in chief for the scientific
journal Marine Pollution Bulletin.
