Soil Behaviour and Soil-Structure Interaction in Seismic Conditions

Course Description
The course is aimed at providing the basic concepts and skills to analyze fundamental geotechnical problems in seismic conditions by means of simplified to advanced approaches. The first lectures will describe the main aspects of soil behavior under cyclic and dynamic loading and the experimental tools to measure the relevant mechanical properties.
The subsequent lectures will be focused on seismic amplification due to site effects, earthquake-induced ground instability, seismic response of retaining structures and dynamic interaction between soil and structures founded on shallow footings or piles.
The theoretical framework, some numerical applications and experimental evidences will be examined.
The students will be guided to solve practical exercises on seismic response analysis and soil-structure interaction in the classroom with the use of their own laptop.
The preliminary knowledge of basic concepts such as complex algebra, dynamic equilibrium of a simple oscillator and response spectrum is expected.
